N.E.W.S 2007
by Tim Holman
N.E.W.S is a competition played every year between different states in Australia sometimes including New Zealand. Every play has to play 3 sports; balloon soccer, hockey and rugby. Anyone with a neuromuscular disorder who has an electric wheelchair can play. If you use a manual wheelchair you can’t compete interstate but you can compete locally.
The state team trains on most Mondays. When there isn’t any state training the team plays in the local competion. The state team trains in the Regency Park School gym.
In April this year, six boys with Muscular Dystrophy went to Sydney for a week, to participate in the National Electric Wheelchair Sports (N.E.W.S). There were teams from Queensland, N.S.W, Victoria, A.C.T, Western Australia and South Australia. Everyone in the team played balloon soccer, hockey and rugby. The team has improved a lot in the past year. Last year we didn’t win a game, but this year we won 2 and drew 2 games. If we had won one more hockey match we could have been in a final. One of the games that we drew was against one the top teams, Victoria.
If you want to represent your state in this unique competition contact the Association on 8234 5266 for more information.
