Treatments
There is as yet, no cure for any of the muscular dystrophies. Medical management may focus on supportive treatments such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy, dietary advice, genetic counselling, drug therapy or surgical intervention.
The aim of which is to:
- Manage symptoms
- Maximise physical capabilities
- and maintain general health and well-being.
These efforts, although not curative, can be effective. They can assist individuals and their families/carers to maintain their independence and quality of life. Research continues around the world in an effort to find a cure for neuromuscular disorders. Strategies being investigated include gene therapy, myoblast therapy, stem cell research and gentamycin research.
